| A semester is
15 weeks long. There are no excused absences. Three absences means you
no longer have an opportunity to make an “A” for
the semester. More than three absences means you have missed
over one fifth of the class. This is inexcusable and is an automatic “F”.
Coming to class late often makes you a pain to me and the class + you will
probably have to sit next to me and be uncomfortable for most of the class. Assignments are due at the beginning of class unless otherwise stated. Projects will be turned as a PDF unless indicated otherwise. If you are absent or late for the beginning of Critique 2, it’s an automatic loss of a grade. You will know you are late because the door is closed. That means if you start out with a 85%, your recorded grade is a 75%! If you are in class for Critique 2, but do not turn in an assigned project it is the loss of a grade. |
Your semester grade will be dependent upon: 1. Prolific thumbnail and layout output. 20-25 % of your time on an exercise is recommended. 2. Problem solving excellence. How visually exciting and/or conceptual was the solution? 3. Execution and presentation. Is the solution neat, is there attention to detail? Were all the parameters of the problem followed? 4. Class participation. Take part in class discussion. Ask questions, or better yet, provide answers. Grades will be dependent on all the above items. To get an “A” on an assignment, it has to reflect thinking and execution that could be seen in the work of a professional in the business of visual communications. A “B” means you’re in the running, you need a little more work and you’ll soon be working at a professional level. A “C” means you need to work quite a bit harder, or you are not familiar enough with the software in order to realize your ideas. In terms of percentages: Below 60% is an F. 60-62 = D-, 63-66 = D, 67-69 = D+ 70-72 = C-, 73-76 = C, 77-79 = C+ 80-82 = B-, 83-86 = B, 87-89 = B+ 90-92 = A-, 93-96 = A, 97-100=A+ A component of this class is time management - just like in the professional world. A suggestion: Don’t wait until just before class to print something out and matt it. Your chances are only 50% that you are going to be successful. When you’re not, you’re late for class and you potentially miss turning in an assignment on time that you’ve spent two, three or four weeks working on. Please do not ask if you can spend class time in the library doing research. You do that on your time. That’s called "being prepared." You have a responsibility to the class. We all learn from each other by what someone says or by what they have prepared to show. The class counts on you to be in class and prepared. This is a junior level class. I expect you to be proficient in QuarkXpress or InDesign and one other imaging software. If you are not, we need to speak right away. |
