C. Jobson - Typography & Letterforms: Intermediate P19
Ex. 6 Dust Jacket

Objectives
You will write explanatory copy, based on research at your local bookstore, a short biography + photo and design a dust jacket predicated on information on your Title Page.

It should make the reader want to purchase your book, or steal it.

To Begin

Make comparisons and contrasts between different kinds of trade books.

Baskerville invented smooth, hot press paper and the page quality was as important to him as the type and printing. You can use the Mac to layout your projects and print them, but choose paper carefully. All aspects of the process including paper are important here. Refer again to Paper Source, Aiko’s and art stores for your stock.

1. Begin by making a trip to your local book store. Observe, make notes on the covers and bring your observations to class. A question you have to ask is “what is the purpose of a book cover”?
2. Identify the text you are going to have to design as part of your cover solution. (Could be a trip to the library here!)
3. Find art appropriate to the subject matter. This means reading at least some of what you included in your text. Do not be afraid.
4. Combine title, editor, publisher's name (which does not have to be in the logotype font) on the front cover. Wrap art around in a single image to the spine which should include the title, your last name as editor and the logo of your publishing house. The back cover must have the logo and logotype in an apropriate size. The front turnunder is about the book - text to be lifted from the web site and the back turnunder is all about you, with acharming photo.
5. Check the archives. Is your work competitive or predictable.
