Objectives
Learn How to design an attention commanding Title Page
Learn the complexities of design a typographically rich and effective TOC
Create an Appendix, rich with reference information.
Review the class Archives then draw thumbnails and refine the design concepts
with type and art.
Title
The Title Page will bear some semblance to your Dust Jacket cover. Choose
type wisely. It should also be related to the rest of your book. It
must have the name of your book, which you choose, your name as the editor,
and the logo and logotype from Exercise 1. You may wish to use a piece
of illustration as a design device.
Table of Contents
Simply one of the most important parts of the book. More people will look at
this page than any other one page in a book. It has to work like a poster in
as much as it has to be attractive and communicate as easily as possible. It
has to lead us into the rest of the book. It has to get us to parts of the book
that skip over what we don’t need to see. It has to be part of the rest
of the book and begins to define design motifs that will be developed later in
the book. All articles plus their authors and the page number must be included.
Art may be part of this two page spread.
Appendix
You will design an additional shorter section for the back of your book.
It will be the same size as you other signatures, but fewer pages. (See
the Appendix Schematic.)The subject of this eight-page section is the
characteristics of types faces from the 9 categories
used in our text: Humanist, Garalde, Transitional, Didone, Slab Serif,
Lineal,Glyphic Script and Graphic.. This information
will be the text basis for your Appendix.
The characteristics of each kind of typography should be identified in
this section. You may choose to include a time line
in your Appendix. You may choose to include the names of all the typographers
referenced in this
book some
place on
the time line. You may not use textbook schematics for your own art in
this section of your book.
Poster
Along with each typographic
essay, you will design one two 11" X 17" posters, one for each
typographer and their historic accomplishments in typography. Choose
a quote, that has a significant amount of typography to execute in the
style of your chosen typographer. Like the reports, they will become
part of each person's book.
What are the purposes of a poster how do
they apply to this part of book making and how can you design it into
the overall look of the book? You will do a short explanation on why
you chose the text, the significance of the text design, the
historic period the poster reflects, the fonts, the point size, the leading. The
class will choose one poster to be letterpress printed at Lark Sparrow
Press in Evanston.
