C. Jobson - Typography & Letterforms: Intermediate P15
Ex. 3  Section Openers and Text Pages for 72 pp Book  - Cont'd from p14

Thumbnails
You MUST examine the class archives and if you choose a book brought to class. We will note their similarities and their differences. Create a grid system based on the maximum live area of you’ve chosen. Choose appropriate fonts and begin creating 20 thumbnails for section spreads and 20 thumbnails for facing pages of text Your thumbnails are based upon the posted art and text in the Class Projects Folder.

Folding Dummy
Complete the book map discussed in class in order to identify the position of the parts of your book. Make a folding dummy by folding 8 1/2" X 11" sheets into half pages, and tear them in half. Number sheets 1- 72. Number the text pages beginning with "i" to "x". (See sample.) Using the book map, indicate the different sections of the book in your folding dummy. Determine what information is backed up by a following page.

Paper Grain
Determine the grain of your text paper by cutting off a vertical strip and a horizontal strip of paper from your text sheet. Moisten them in your mouth. The one that remains straight indicates the flow of the grain. (See grain diagram) Create two 20pp signatures using two sheets of 11” x 17” paper so that the spine of the book runs with the grain. (See spine diagram)

Later, using your dummy, you will create 9 separate folders for InDesign documents each containing 8 impositioned pages. (This will help eliminate crashing and create efficient down loading of art files in the lab.)
