C. Jobson - Typography & Letterforms: Intermediate P10
Ex. 1: Logo & Logotype

Exercise Objectives

You will learn how to design a logo and logotype based on typography as image.

To Begin

You will begin by dividing up into four groups. Each group will brainstorm a credible name for an independent publisher and have the solutions critiqued by the class.

Next

Each group should decide on the name of their press and begin building a small identity program consisting of stationary, envelope and business card, based on using letterforms as the origin of design. The logo should be used large as well as appear on the spine of a book. You will use this name and mark for three projects of this semester’s projects. Pick carefully, design carefully, love what you do because you have to live with it for 15 weeks. Though your group will have the same name, each designer will his or her own solution.

Your font choices are not limited to a particular historical period. The letters that form the name of your publisher must then be arranged and reinterpreted into an interesting logo. You may not use images or symbols with the logo unless they are an integral part of the letterform. An image can be no more than 25% of the logo size. All design work must be in black and white.

All the assignments assume that you are an independent publisher. That is, you are engaged in publishing material based on a theme important to you: scholarly/ academic studies of graphic arts.
Begin with a review of historical publishing logotypes. Where can you find them? Also check the Class Archives for work of past students.
