South Central Bank Graphic Design Position

11.22.09

South Central Bank is seeking a student in either graphic design or advertising art direction to intern in the marketing department. Design duties may include creating newspaper ads, collateral, signs, posters, etc. Other duties besides design work will be assigned like managing mailing lists, contacting newspapers, acquiring quotes from printers, and other marketing duties.

Required Skills:
Indesign CS3
Photoshop CS3
Illustrator CS3
Great communication skills
Attention to detail
Basic knowledge of Excel, Word, and Powerpoint

Please contact Chuck Rudy (crudy@banksouthcentral.com) with your cover letter, resume, and a pdf of a few samples of your work. No phone calls please.”

Just as a heads up- the ideal person should be fairly self sufficient. There is no one else in the marketing department, so they should know how to create pdfs, file formatting, and some printer expectations (like bleeds, CMYK, etc). They will be reporting directly to the president of the bank and the CFO (don’t worry, it’s not too intimidating, it’s a pretty small bank). The projects start out slow, but they will eventually build more responsibility once everyone gets used to each other. Dress pants and nice tops are the attire.

Although it may seem daunting at first, this is a good internship. I had to learn how to make contacts (like searching for printers), read media kits, manage deadlines, work on corporate design, problem solve and work around someone else’s vision. It’s a good way to gauge how it is when you’re an in-house designer for a small business. The best part is that the position is PAID. It pays more (at least when I started) more than most internships out there.

Typography as “meta” communication.
Meta- is a prefix used to express a higher, deeper, symbolic or more complex
meaning. For example, the metaphor “dense as a jungle” indicates teeming with vegetation, but it also indicates complicated, tangled or difficult to understand.
While physics describes the physical arrangement of the world, metaphysics
describes the spiritual or cosmological significance of the world. Meta- points in
many directions – to a concept, an explanation, a definition, an example, just to
name a few.

The STA will reproduce the top posters (at 24 in. x 36 in.) and invite all
scholarship entrants to the holiday party where the top posters will be included in
the silent auction.

Chicago Magazine
09.17.09

Is there's anyone interested in a part-time internship with Chicago Magazine? We had an intern who just started, but she found a job, so we have an opening once again. Unfortunately it is unpaid, but great experience, looks fantastic on a resume...the hours are fairly flexible, we really just need someone that can be here two full days a week, say 10am to 6pm, if they have more availability, we'd be happy to have them for more than that.
