| Required textbook |
Math 111: Intro to Probability (S. Tan), a custom book
available only at the University of Maryland. A solution manual is
also available. We shall cover the entire book.

| Homework |
Below this syllabus is a list of homework problems
organized by date of class. While these homework
problems will generally not be collected, it is very
important that you work on them as we progress in class.
If it looks like many students are not doing the
problems and the grades are suffering, I may assign
problems from the text to be collected. As further
motivation to do the homework problems, I should mention
that these suggested problems are all fair game for
quizzes and exams. |
| Quizzes |
I shall generally give a weekly quiz in class on either
Tuesday or Thursday. All quizzes will be announced in advance.
If we run out of time in class, I may give a quiz as a
take-home assignment.

There will be three in-class exams and a two-hour
cumulative final exam at the end of the semester. |

| Absence/Makeups |
(Unexcused) late homework and/or take-home quizzes will
be penalized by 25% per day late. University rules
require make-up exams to be given only in the event of
illness, religious observance, or participation in
University activities. This rule will be strictly
enforced. Written documentation must be provided before
you will be permitted to take a make-up exam. In the
event of illness, you must bring a note from a physician
stating that "you were too ill to attend class that
day". (A note showing you were at the Student Health
Services is not enough.) For absences that could have
been foreseen (e.g., Religious observation, jury duty),
you must inform me prior to the exam in order to take a
make-up. For any participation in a University activity,
you must have a note from the coach or advisor stating
that you will not be able to attend class. Talk to me
first. |
