About the Civic Engagement and Responsibility Committee:
In the wake of September 11, 2001, the College Council at Columbia College formed the Civic Engagement and Responsibility Committee. The Columbia College Mission is "to educate students who will communicate creatively and shape the public's perceptions of issues and events and who will author the culture of their times." It promotes "active engagement in the life and culture of the city of Chicago," as well as state, regional, national and global civic engagement.
This committee was created by a resolution of the College Council, "to encourage civic commitment among its student body, and to give practicality to the College's mission statement." That resolution asked that Columbia College set aside a day each month for "a college-wide event centered on the theme of promoting civic engagement and responsibility, with each department of the College given the option to assume the responsibility of conceiving, arranging, promoting and implementing such an event at least once during the academic year."
